A personal note from Alison Damianou, founder of the Meet Market:
This was the very first Meet Market. December 2008 on the first floor of a little bar in Gazi called K44 which now no longer exists. I had no idea that this little one-off Christmas market project was going to grow and evolve as it would. It makes me very emotional looking back and seeing the journey of this event... this dream. I had just moved back home to Greece from San Francisco, where I had spent the last 3 years running a small scale jewelry business and selling at markets around the Bay Area. I was looking for markets like the ones I had seen abroad, but couldn't quite find one...
I did however, as I walked the streets of Athens and started building my new life, find a very vibrant community of local designers, hand-crafters and producers. And it was so inspiring and so authentic.
I began meeting more like-minded makers, and it occurred to me that this artisan market that I was looking for didn't exist already but there was a need for it, and this was a chance to make one, uniting this community of local talent - and it could be whatever we wanted to. We could add some djs for some party atmosphere, some cocktails for some extra fun and socialization, some parallel activities to enhance the sense of community - and make a celebration out of this authentic, creative, local scene.
And that's exactly what I did... what we did. Together with an expanding community of local designers, djs, venue coordinators, lots a sweat, tears and hard work, persistence and consistency, over the course of 15 years, we have now created the biggest artisan market in Greece. To date, we have organized nearly 200 events in nearly 40 venues and have a roster of over 300 rotating makers.
This is where it all began.
